Chapter 10

Ginseng Headaches

◆◆◆

Iwoke in the morning to the sight of the sun that finally reached its bright tendrils of light through the clouds. The glare as it reflected off the cave wall was hard on my eyes and did not help the pounding in my head.

“Ugh,” I rolled away from the light, wondering why I felt so awful. The more alert I became, the crappier I felt. My head was throbbing, my mouth was dry, and small waves of nausea crept up on me every few minutes. Maybe I should sleep some more. I closed my eyes against the discomfort. Beneath my right arm came the nudge of a warm nose.

“Hey, buddy.”

Arthur’s silent reply and persistent nudging told me he wasn’t waiting any longer to start his day. Donkeys sure do love their routines, and usually, that worked in my favor. But that morning, it was more of a nuisance.

“Alright, alright,” I groaned as I stood. “I feel pretty crummy today. Not sure why.”

I pulled Arthur by his rope to the cave entrance, kicking beer cans out of the way. It took me a few moments of wakefulness outside in the fresh air to realize that all those beer cans might be part of my problem.

“I wonder if too much of that beer is bad for you. What do you think?”

Arthur peed, paying me no mind.

We finished our morning ablutions and walked back into the cool dark cave, where I counted eight cans of beer scattered across the floor.

“Oh man, what a waste! I can’t believe I drank all of those.” I shook my head in dismay but supposed I could always return to the same cabin and hope there might be more. Or maybe the campground.

I started picking up the cans and throwing them in the cave's corner. As I worked through the cave cleaning up my mess, the previous night’s antics came back to me. I thought I had dreamt about the part where I saw the cave art and created my own. But, when I looked at the wall, it was all there. It was the most ridiculous portrayal I had ever seen. All I saw were laughable stick figures standing in a circular object that I guessed was supposed to be a hot tub.

Maybe it will look better up close. I mused and stepped forward.

Nope. It looked worse. It looked so bad that I couldn’t help but chuckle. And, the longer I studied it, the worse it looked, and the harder I laughed. I couldn’t believe I had done something so absurd.

Before long, Arthur began to bray loudly as if laughing with me, which brought me to my knees and tears to my eyes. We stayed there making quite a ruckus for several minutes before I coughed a little, cleared my throat, and wiped my eyes. I took a deep breath, reveling in the warm glow from a good old-fashioned belly bustin’ laughing fit.

“Shoot, Arthur. I suppose we can’t sit here laughing all day. It’s time to decide what we’re going to do with ourselves.
